Notes:The Black Flag, hanging from a white flag pole is an art piece installed in a city square. In this case Bruunsparken in Gothenburg. The Black Flag in Gothenburg was a remembrance of the riots during the G8 meeting five years earlier, and this time the flag as installed during the European Athletics Championships, the next major international event after the G8 meeting. Black flag was a hardcore punk band from California, who was active in the late seventies and early eighties. The band probably did get the idea for its name from the anarchist movement, who has used the black flag since at least the 1880’s and maybe earlier. The black flag was used by the anarchist as anti flag, but also using the black colour as a symbol of struggle and resistance. A kind of fight and struggle was also the issue when the American artist Ad Rheinhardt was forming some of the base for conceptual art. He gave up colour like the anarchists, and started to show black canvases in New York in the fifties. But probably the first to use the black flag in a pure black way, might be the Shiah Muslims, so in a way the simple act of putting up a black flag points to many areas, however to me it is first of all a sort of disturbing monochrome.
